The 8-day Mount Rwenzori Hiking Safari in Uganda allows you to see the various wildlife animals of Queen Elizabeth National Park and hike to the top of Uganda’s highest point, the Magherita Peak on Mount Rwenzori, a block mountain in East Africa. The mountain, which lies on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, serves as a trans-boundary resource for the two countries, receiving 600 mm of rain annually.

Transfer to Rwenzori Mountain.
The journey to the Rwenzori Mountains passes through Kasese, passing by fascinating attractions such as the royal drum makers and the Equator, which allows you to be in both hemispheres at the same time. This lovely journey takes you through roadside markets brimming with fresh fruits and vegetables. It is worthwhile to continue to the escarpment overlooking the Great Rift Valley before arriving at your hotel, with the Rwenzori Mountains providing a majestic backdrop. At Equator Snow Lodge, you’ll have dinner and spend the night.
Nyakalengija (1600m) to Nyabitaba (2650m) trailhead.
The trailhead for adventurous hiking in the Rwenzori Mountains is Nyakalengija (1600m). It’s fantastic to walk through the banana shambas on the steep foothills’ sides, as well as the homesteads at the foothills, and then follow the trail along the Mubuku River.The Rwenzori Mountains hike continues after crossing the Mahoma River and ascending through slopes and Podocarpus forest. Nyabitaba Hut is where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.
Nyabitaba (2650m) to John Matte (3350m).
Another stage in the Rwenzori Mountains is from the Nyabitaba hut to the Kurt Shafer Bridge below the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku Rivers, via a small trail sloping down through the forest. Hiking out of the Rwenzori forest and into a bamboo zone via a long stretch of moss-covered ground is thrilling. To Nyamileju rock shelter, pass through the lobelia zone, giant heather, and groundsel, then cross a difficult bog to your hut. At John Matte Hut, you’ll have dinner and spend the night.
John Matte (3350m) to Bujuku (3900m).
Another trail in the Rwenzori Mountains descends to cross the Bujuku River before entering Lower Bigo Bog, which is home to giant lobelias. Continue to Bujuku Lake after crossing the bog to the Upper Bigo bog, where you can see one of the high peaks of Mount Stanley to the west. Bujuku Hut is where we had dinner and stayed the night.
Bujuku (3900m) to Elena’s 5th day (4541m).
The adventurous trail leads from Bujuku hut to the slopes west of the lake, passing through the eerie Groundsel Gully before ascending to Scott-Elliot Pass (4372m). Over a steep rocky trail, pass through an extremely steep section to Elena Hut and Mt Stanley, while the left leads to Scott-Elliot Pass and down to Kitandara Lakes.Elena Hut (4541m), at the base of the Stanley Glacier, is where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.
Elena Hut (4541m) to the summit (5109m) or Kitandara Hut descent (4023m).
Transfer from Elena Hut to Kitandara Hut for those who do not wish to climb the Magherita peak (4023m). Those who wish to continue on to the Margherita peak (5109m) will need three hours to climb and then descend to Kitandara Hut. Climb to the Margherita summit, the highest point on the Rwenzori Mountain, via the glacier and the Stanley Plateau. View the magical Bujuku Lake and Mt Speke from afar on your way back through Scott-Elliot, then down to the Kitandara Lakes. Kitandara Hut is where you’ll have dinner and spend the night.
Kitandara Hut (4023m) to Guy Yeoman (3260m).
Freshfield Pass is reached after a steep climb from the base of Mt Baker to the south side of the mountain (4280m). There are views of the Congo to the west and Mt Stanley to the north. The boggy pass descends from the pass, passing the rock shelter at Bujangolo, which served as the base camp for the Duke of Abruzzi’s historic expedition in 1906. Guy Yeoman Hut for dinner and the night.
Departure from Nyakalengiija Trail Head (1600m).
Breakfast in the morning and equipment loading. Later, the porters and some of the climbers made their way out of the mountains. Trekking will take place over a six-hour walk that passes by nearby Lake Mahona and Nyabitaba, as well as the healthier area surrounding the Moss zone.Drive to Kampala via Kasese and then to the airport for your flight out.
